Cardboard Shipping Boxes

Standard Cartons and Presentation-Style Boxes Aren't the Same Product

"Shipping box" covers two fairly different jobs. A plain kraft carton just needs to survive the trip — strong flute, tight seams, minimal cost. A window-front flower box or gift-style shipping box has to survive the trip and look good the moment it's opened, which means the corrugated board also has to hold a clean die-cut edge and a crisp printed surface. We produce both from the same base material, but the board weight, liner grade, and finishing steps we choose are different for each.

Picking Flute Strength for What's Actually Inside

Going one size stronger than necessary just adds cost and stiffness that makes folding harder; going one size weaker risks corner crush in transit. A quick way to think about it:

  • E flute — light, printable, good for flower boxes, gift sets, and anything under a few kilograms
  • C flute — the everyday choice for parcel shipping, apparel, and household goods
  • B/C double wall — for palletized loads, export cartons, or anything getting stacked in a warehouse

Why Die-Cut Windows Need Their Own Structural Plan

Cutting a transparent window into a shipping box removes material exactly where the panel used to carry load, so the surrounding frame has to make up for it. This is usually done with a wider uncut border, a reinforced fold line near the window edge, and — where the window is large, as on flower or bouquet boxes — an inner support flap that the film is mounted against rather than the raw cut edge. Skipping this step is the most common reason window boxes arrive with a torn corner even when the box itself never got dropped.

Kraft, White, or Printed: What the Finish Actually Changes

How common shipping box finishes compare in practice
Finish Print Result Typical Use
Natural Kraft 1–2 color, earthy tone shows through Everyday shipping, moving cartons
White Top Liner Sharp, true colors Branded parcels, retail-facing shipments
Full-Color Offset Print Photo-quality graphics, gradients Gift boxes, seasonal or promotional runs

If you're only ordering one or two colors, kraft with spot printing is almost always the more economical route — we tend to save full offset printing for boxes where the graphic itself is doing the selling.

Sizing a Carton to the Product, Not the Other Way Around

Extra empty space inside a shipping box does two things: it lets the product shift and take impact during transit, and on most parcel carriers it can push the shipment into a higher dimensional-weight price bracket regardless of actual weight. Stock sizes are convenient, but for recurring shipments a carton cut to the product's real footprint — even a difference of one or two centimeters per side — tends to pay for the tooling cost within the first few hundred units.
